The Music of Melancholia

Director, Lars von Trier takes science fiction to a new level in the film “Melancholia” staring Kristen Dunst and Charlotte Gainsbourg. In this moving film, a rogue planet is heading toward earth and eventually crashes into it, destroying all life on our small blue planet. The journey, which leads to this devastating end, is a remarkable musical score and visual effect that truly leaves the audience wanting more.

The score that accompanies mankind’s tragic fate is music from the musical opera, “Tristan and Isolde” by the German composer, Richard Wagner. The dark music is paired beautifully with dreamlike effects that set the mood for the entire film. Some of the most memorable images include that of Kirsten Dunst wearing a white tulle bridal gown floating in a pond surrounded by lilies, her running through a field as tree roots cling to her ankles while her dress train is pulling at her back, and finally the giant planet, Melancholia colliding with Earth.

This film, which has received six nominations and has already won two awards, is playing in select theaters or available to view on amazon.com.
