Soon after seeing Kelsey Bennett's exhibit, Hypnogogia, at the Christopher Henry Gallery in Soho we knew she would be the perfect photographer to capture the backstage moments at our show with her brilliant eye and unique style. Tomorrow, Kelsey will be showcasing her latest work, "Black Velvet: The Godfather of Soul." This collection of photographs illustrates the life of Charles Bradley, an artist heavily inspired by the late James Brown. The exhibit walks you through the personal and emotional attachment Bradley has to the Black Velvet persona through vibrant and playful images taken in his natural environments. Bennett fearlessly explores the transformative dynamic of both music and identity.
Having been influenced by James Brown since the age of fourteen, Bradley writes his own material and focuses his music career and performances on the beloved "Godfather of Soul." To get a taste of Bradley's tribute songs click here.
Bennett's exhibition will be up for all to see beginning tomorrow at the Christopher Henry Gallery located at 127 Elizabeth Street (at Broome). The opening will take place on Thursday, July 21 from 7-10 p.m. and the show will run through August 14, 2011. Hope to see you there!
