Behind The Scenes Resort 2012 : Interview With Director Kenneth Cappello

Photographer Kenneth Cappello is a man of many talents. Kenneth credits his upbringing in skateboarding and punk rock for his raw energetic images. His recent work includes the Uniqlo UT 2011 spring campaign, the Nike 2011 fall campaign and album packaging for Chris Brown and Joe Jonas. His photography has been featured in magazines such as iD, Dazed & Confused, and Flair. In 2006, Kenneth made his directorial debut with The Kills 'No Wow' video. We couldn't have been more thrilled to have Kenneth direct our very first music film with Rye Rye. We can not thank Kenneth enough for bringing our Resort 2012 collection to life. To learn more about Kenneth read below….

1. How did you get your start?
My dad gave me a camera when I was 11. I started setting up photoshoots of my pet parrot Maria. I'd sit her on top of Garfield's head or whatever other stuffed animals I was into at the time - you know, still life. Then I got into skateboarding and started taking photos of my friends skating and going to punk shows. Then I moved to NYC and somehow ended up at David LaChappelle's studio in 1997, and I was like, "Wow", this is where photos come from" and I dove in.

2. What films / music videos were most inspiring to you when it came to working on the Prabal Gurung Resort 2012 film?
I was into some Madonna videos and Belly by Hype Williams, listening to The Kills new record and Vado's Slime Flu mixtape, and watching a lot of kickboxing.

3. Do you have a favorite scene?
I like the duplicates of the dancers and Rye Rye against the LED lights dancing.

4. How do you balance your aesthetic with that of the artist or company you are working with?
Well that's tricky...if you're working for them, you're there for a reason. But, sometimes you gotta give a little to get...but there's a lot of people involved with projects like this and sometimes other people's opinions or ideas don't coincide with yours, then it gets interesting. But usually it all works out...

5. What was the most challenging job you have ever worked on? And what is the most exciting or outrageous thing that you have come across while on the job?
Sometimes you have to shoot somebody that doesn't want to be there or do the job, when that happens that's the most challenging. I've had some good ones -- I've had guns pointed at me, been threatened by Mike Tyson, sleept on R Kelly's floor, but I just roll with it. I'm in their world and not many people have the opportunity to be in that world. I'm into it.

6. Where do you go for inspiration?
A lot of music and my past is where I look for inspiration. Also I have a teacup chihuahua that keeps me alive and finding new ideas...

7. Blogger or Tumblr?
Was a blogger before I found tumblr. Tumblr's better.
Check out chichblog.tumblr.com!

8. In your opinion, what makes fashion and music collaborations so powerful?
They're both the heart of pop culture . They go hand in hand. You can't do one without the other... they make each other. The kids exposed to these collaborations are getting younger and younger.

9. What’s next for Kenneth Cappello?
Next for Kenneth Cappello is directing two music videos for The Kills this summer, I want to make a horror movie, and I'm working on 3 photo books right now...

10. What’s your #newthing?
Being healthy, staying out of trouble, and my dog Cicciolina.
